Beginner Lesson 3: The Rolling Barrel (On2)

Note: This is a sample lesson to give you a taste of Patrick and Scarlet’s teaching methodology. You can sign-up for the full salsa program here.

Now that you’ve learned the Left Turn and the Cross Body Lead it’s time to put you to the test and combine these skills together in a combo we like to call The Rolling Barrel.

It’s got an extra skill involved that we haven’t taught you yet but, with two great coaches on your side, we’ve got faith you’ll get the hang of it quickly.

Kick this pattern off with a left turn for the follows then a left turn for the fellas. Finish her off with nice smooth barrel roll. Are you ready to roll with this?

Take a lookie to see what sort of fun you’re about to get yourself into.

Lead’s Part

Lead’s your up first! Your partner should already be comfortable following a left turn and the cross body lead. The only thing she may not be familiar with is the inside turn (used in the barrel roll) so, if it’s her first time, be patient  until she watches the follow’s part below.

Follow’s Part

Despite what some people may say, you can’t “Just follow it!” Following isn’t so plain and simple. In order for a dance to truly feel great, follow’s have just as much technique to learn and think about as the leads. Let’s dig into some of the details that will help you smoothly flow through this pattern.

Practice

Now that you’ve learned the pattern let’s go through the motions a bunch more times to really dial it in. Start your basic when they do and when Patrick waves his arm it’s go time!

That’s a Wrap! What’s Next?
