The Bachata Basic Step: Side to Side, Front to Back, and On the Spot
Free Bachata Lesson 1 of 3
This lesson is part of our online bachata program with Regan and Harold. If you enjoy it, try the bachata program free for a week.
What you’ll learn: the bachata basic step in three directions. Side to side, front to back, and on the spot. It’s the same simple rhythm each time (three steps and a tap). Nail this and you’ve got the foundation every bachata move sits on.
1. Side to side
The one most people start with. This is your home base.
2. Front to back
Same rhythm, pointed forward and back instead of side to side. Step forward, forward, forward, tap. Then back, back, back, tap. You’ll use this constantly when you dance with a partner.
3. On the spot
The same count without traveling anywhere, just marking the rhythm in place. Handy when the floor’s crowded, and great for practicing the hip pop without thinking about direction.
The tap on 4 and 8 is the same in all three. That’s the accent that makes it bachata instead of walking. Keep your weight off the tapping foot.
This was lesson 1 of your first three, free.

Quick questions
What is the bachata basic step?
The bachata basic step is a step-step-step-tap pattern over four counts. The “tap” is a light press into the floor with the toe—not a complete weight-shift—on counts 4 and 8. You can do it in various directions and orientations. The essence of it is the step pattern with hip movement. It’s the foundation of every bachata move to come.
